How to Blur the App Preview in Android Apps Using AI

This Knowledge Base article describes how to use Appdome’s AI/ML in your CI/CD pipeline to continuously deliver plugins that Blur App Preview in Android apps.

What is Blur App Preview?

Blur App Preview is a security measure designed to protect sensitive information within mobile apps by obscuring the app’s screen when it is minimized or moved to the background. This prevents unauthorized screenshots or screen recordings from capturing sensitive data. In apps that handle confidential information, such as financial or medical applications, blurring the preview screen when it is no longer in focus helps reduce the risk of data leaks. This protection is essential in safeguarding private user information that may otherwise be exposed while cached in the background or visible in app previews. Implementing screen blurring helps protect user privacy, aligns with compliance requirements, and guards against potential data leaks when the app is not actively in use.

How Appdome Protects Mobile Apps with Blur App Preview?

Appdome account (create a free Appdome account here)
A license for Blur App Preview
Mobile App (.apk or .aab for Android)
Signing Credentials (see Signing Secure Android apps and Signing Secure iOS apps)

How to Implement Blur App Preview in Android Apps Using Appdome

On Appdome, follow these 3 simple steps to create self-defending Android Apps that Blur App Preview without an SDK or gateway:

Designate the Mobile App to be protected.
1. Upload an app via the Appdome Mobile Defense platform GUI or via Appdome’s DEV-API or CI/CD Plugins.
2. Android Formats: .apk or .aab
3. Blur App Preview is compatible with: Java, JS, C++, C#, Kotlin, Flutter, React Native, Unity, Xamarin, Cordova and other Android apps.
Select the defense: Blur App Preview.

Create and name the Fusion Set (security template) that will contain the Blur App Preview feature as shown below:

Follow the steps in Sections 2.2-2.2.2 of this article to add the Blur App Preview feature to your Fusion Set via the Appdome Console.

When you select the Blur App Preview you'll notice that the Fusion Set you created in step 2.1 now bears the icon of the protection category that contains Blur App Preview.

Open the Fusion Set Detail Summary by clicking the “...” symbol on the far-right corner of the Fusion Set. Copy the Fusion Set ID from the Fusion Set Detail Summary (as shown below):

Follow the instructions below to use the Fusion Set ID inside any standard mobile DevOps or CI/CD toolkit like Bitrise, Jenkins, Travis, Team City, Circle CI or other system:

Add the Blur App Preview feature to your security template.

Navigate to Build > Anti ATO tab > Mobile Account Protection section in the Appdome Console.
Like all other options in ONEShield™, Blur App Preview is turned on by default, as shown below:

Note: The App Compromise Notification contains an easy to follow default remediation path for the mobile app end user. You can customize this message as required to achieve brand specific support, workflow or other messaging.

Configure the User Experience Options for Blur App Preview:
With Threat-Events™ OFF, Appdome provides several user experience options for mobile brands and developers.

App Compromise Notification: Customize the pop-up or toast Appdome uses to notify the user when a threat is present while using the protected mobile app.

Short message Option. This is available for mobile devices that allow a banner notification for security events.

Localized Message Option. Allows Appdome users to support global languages in security notifications.

Blur App Preview Threat Code™. Appdome uses AI/ML to generate a unique code each time Blur App Preview is triggered by an active threat on the mobile device. Use the code in Appdome Threat Resolution Center™ to help end users identify, find and resolve active threats on the personal mobile devices.

Initiate the build command either by clicking Build My App at the bottom of the Build Workflow (shown in Figure 4) or via your CI/CD as described in Section 2.1.4.

Certify the Blur App Preview feature in Android Apps

After building Blur App Preview, Appdome generates a Certified Secure™ certificate to guarantee that the Blur App Preview protection has been added and is protecting the app. To verify that the Blur App Preview protection has been added to the mobile app, locate the protection in the Certified Secure™ certificate as shown below:
